House Up for Grabs in Drug Case

His wife says that he didn’t do it. She is not impressed with the American justice system and she thinks that the government is just trying to get their New Jersey home. Her husband is not getting out on bail because she won’t sign over the house and let them win.

But the federal prosecutor Peter M. Nothstein in Baltimore says that Dmytro Holovko has been the deliveryman for drugs and cash. He would travel to Arizona with the cash and then drive and then return to a meeting spot on Liberty Road in Baltimore and unload hundreds of pounds of marijuana. He was also known to have delivered drugs to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The organization behind the drug trafficking, run by a person named Jean Brown, is known to be violent and it is responsible for killings that took place in Mexico, and a murder in White Marsh. Ms. Brown is known for having millions of dollars worth of real estate in Jamaica. Holovko is known to have visited her in Miami as well.

Holovko is not connected to the murder, only to the delivery of the money and the drugs. He is only charged with one count of drug trafficking, but authorities have evidence that he made the trip several times.

Holovko is a Czech national, not a U.S. citizen, and that makes the case a bit more complicated. As his wife expressed, they are maintaining that he is innocent and that the government is out to get them. His wife has stated that, “My husband is a scapegoat. They think he's a stupid immigrant who doesn't speak good English.” In the prison, he had to be moved to a secure area because he called other inmates racial epithets and there were fights. He has enlisted the help of the Czech Embassy to get his court-appointed lawyer, a Mr. Gigliotti, removed because he thought that the lawyer wasn’t really helping his case.

There are a few interesting facts to learn here. One is that drug money isn’t always found in stacks of cash – sometimes it is used to purchase real estate in other countries or in the United States. Secondly, if there is any innocence on Mr. Holovko’s part, it may be that he believed that “just” being the courier would not get him into trouble. Last of all, Holovko’s jilted lawyer believes that his client’s background in a Communist state twists his understanding of whether a court-appointed lawyer could work for the client and not the government.
