Drug Studies Need Volunteers

There’s an opportunity to help and get help at the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration website. It’s open to those currently abusing drugs and those who are clean – even those who have never used illegal drugs at all.

Several studies out of the Bayview campus in Baltimore recruit volunteers to help. In some programs, different addiction treatment options are tested to see how well they work. But even if you are a current user not yet ready for treatment, they can use you for comparison in their studies.

Studies follow strict privacy protocols and have to be approved by the ethics committee. They are funded in different ways and focus on different drugs of abuse. Currently listed are four on heroin or narcotic addiction (using methadone) and one on cocaine abuse.

Generally, volunteers receive a physical and all medications associated with the study free of charge, along with follow-up care. Some participants may be reimbursed for travel expenses.

These programs are the cutting edge of research into pharmaceutical treatments for the most difficult to treat addictions. This type of research is an essential element to advance our understanding of the best methodology and establishes protocols that will influence drug abuse programs all over the country.

Some programs compare treatments for those already addicted to help them withdraw, some focus on management and all have a high degree of scientific rigor. Participants are expected to finish the whole course of treatment offered and report their experiences or keep logs/diaries. Because of this commitment, having a “study buddy” is a good way to approach enrollment. If you know someone who would be willing to take part with you, that would be ideal.
